flexfield5Add 3121 to the mounting pile of evidence: Prince is the black Beck. He's a whole lot sexier, no doubt, but there's more to both musicians than image. All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third. Prince--looking ageless in videos for the first two singles, the controversy-courting "Black Sweat" and the sauna-steeped "Te Amo Corazon"--proves fearless as ever here, folding fat slabs of disco-funk into rock, heaping measured doses of hip-hop atop soul-tinted jazz supports, and slamming Latin rhythms against old-school R&B riffs. Nothing sounds as slinky-stylish-smart. And nobody delivers quite so deliciously, especially when what they're delivering is ultimately a madcap sonic mash. The usual hype surrounding a Prince release attended this one; over the long-term, expect a few standouts within a way worth-it set to emerge. They include the danceable "Love"; the gospel-lite falsetto feast "Satisfied"; and the summer-breezy "Beautiful, Loved & Blessed." --Tammy La Gorce

Michael Jackson: Farewell to the King of Pop is an interesting and sometimes moving video record of collective grief outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles on July 7, 2009, the day of Michael Jackson's memorial service. While 11,000 people, who won access to the event via Internet lottery, enter and exit the Center, Farewell interviews a number of them about their recollections of and feelings toward Jackson. The interviewees represent a multi-generational cross-section of mourners, including folks who traveled in from out-of-state, ordinary denizens of L.A., and several performers and Jackson impersonators. Everyone is asked the same set of questions about the significance of Jackson's music in their lives, where they were when they heard about his death, and what he will mean to them in years to come.
Not surprisingly, everyone is in an especially expansive frame of mind, calling Jackson the greatest entertainer of all time and expressing certainty that his music and positive messages will influence generations to come. With so much Jackson coverage in the media in weeks following his death, it's hard to get the proper perspective on Michael Jackson: Farewell to the King of Pop. But in time it will be a fascinating measure of the true passion of his fans. --Tom KeoghOn July 7, 2009 tens of thousands of mourning fans descended upon the Staples Center in Los Angeles to pay their final respects to Michael Jackson- the world's most beloved entertainer. This documentary film is a tribute to Michael Jackson and his message of love and peace, told in the words of the fans who traveled from all over the world to honor and celebrate his life. **Please note that no footage of the memorial service is included in this tribute.
